Sterilized By A Laptop Computer?

Two recent studies have shown that the use of laptop computers may contribute to male infertility.  But how big of a concern is infertility these days?

Actually it’s a huge concern!  Infertility is a painful reality for 6 million women and men in the U.S.A.  Many couples have tried for years to conceive with no success.  Some have tried infertility treatments like oral hormones, in vitro fertilization and myriad treatments.

While it’s a fact that the majority of fertility issues are related to the female half of the couple, statistics show that 40% are related to the male.  This is a significant percentage.

Obviously male fertility is also of concern to the female partner if they plan on having children.  So if you’re a man who uses a laptop computer and you would like to have children (or more children) someday, you and your partner should pay attention to the conclusions of two recent studies.

The first study, presented at a meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, analyzed sperm samples from 15 men. Those samples exposed to radio frequency electromagnetic waves from WiFi for 4 hours, were not only less mobile, but they had more DNA fragmentation and damage.

Less sperm motility is a well known cause of male infertility problems since sperm have to be mobile enough to reach and fertilize the egg.  DNA contains the genetic material that codes for proteins that control the cell.

Another study verified that laptops heat up the scrotum and testicles when men have them in their lap.  Laptops have become a very common way for people to connect with the world, but the machines generate a lot of heat .This can contribute to sterility in men because the testicles have to be several degrees cooler than the rest of the body to produce healthy sperm.

Therefore it appears that laptops may lead to male infertility in two ways – by overheating the testicles and by the effects of WiFi on sperm DNA. Therefore, using a laptop could make it more difficult to conceive.

It’s unknown whether the damage laptop computers do to sperm are temporary or permanent. But why not be safe instead of sorry? If you use a laptop computer, put it on a table or desk – not in your lap.

Are there other things men can do to protect their fertility?  According to Suzanne Kavid, MD, Director of reproductive endocrinology at Loyola University Health System, and an associate professor for the department of obstetrics and gynecology and of the department of medicine at Loyola’s Stritch School of Medicine here is some advice on protecting male fertility:

  • Stay out of hot tubs.
  • Wear boxers instead of briefs.
  • Don’t engage in exercise that generates trauma or heat in the genital area.
  • Eat a nutritious diet.
  • Take a multivitamin every day.
  • Get 8 hours of sleep each night.
  • Drink an adequate amount of water and don’t drink more than 2 cups of coffee a day.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Avoid recreational drugs and alcohol.
  • Avoid possible exposure to toxins.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Learn how to cope with stress and use stress reduction techniques where necessary.
  • And of course don’t place your laptop on your lap.

Laptops are portable and convenient, but, if you’re a man, don’t let them damage your sperm and keep you from conceiving.
