Maybe you’re an alcoholic? How to tell.

 Alcohol dependence  is the most severe type of problem drinking. Often when people come to one of my alcohol awareness classes, my alcohol class students wonder how to spot the signs and symptoms of alcoholism.

 Alcohol dependence requires all the signs of alcohol misuse,but it also involves an additional component: physical reliance on alcohol. There’s a fine line among alcohol misuse and alcoholism, but if you depend on booze to function or really feel physically compelled to consume alcohol, you’ve crossed it.

Tolerance: The 1st key warning signal of alcohol dependence. 

Do you have to drinkconsumemuch more than you used to to get buzzed or to feel relaxed? Can you consume far more than other men and women without getting drunk? These are indicators of tolerance, which can be an earlier forewarning sign of alcoholism. Tolerance suggests that, over time, you require a lot more booze to experience the exact same effects you used to with lesser amounts.

Withdrawal: The 2nd major warning signal of alcoholism.

Do you need an alcoholic beverage  to steady the shakes when you wake up?  Drinking to ease or steer clear of withdrawal signs or symptoms is an indicator of alcohol depdendence  and a big red flag. When you consume heavily, your body will get utilised to the booze and experiences withdrawal symptoms if it’s taken away. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Nervousness or jumpiness
  • Shakiness or trembling
  • Perspiring
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sleeplessness
  • Despair
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Decline of appetite
  • Headache

In serious cases, withdrawal from booze can also include hallucinations, confusion, seizures, fever, and agitation. These signs can be dangerous, so talk to your doctor if you are a major drinker and want to give up.

Other signs and symptoms of alcoholism:

  • You have no  control over your drinking.
  • You generally drink much more alcohol than you desired to, for more time  than you intend  or inspite of telling yourself you wouldn’t.
  • You want to quit drinking, but you can’t. You have a prolonged need to cut straight down or quit your booze use, but your endeavours to stop have been unsuccessful.
  • You have given up other activities because of alcohol.
  • You’re investing less time on activities that used to be important to you (hanging out with loved ones and friends, heading to the gym, going after your leisure pursuits) simply because of your alcohol use.
  • Alcohol takes up a great deal of your energy and focus. You commit a lot of time drinking, considering about it, or recovering from its results.
  • You have few if any pursuits or sociable involvements that don’t have to do with  drinking.
  • You consume although you know it’s triggering problems. For example, you acknowledge that your alcohol use is harmful your marriage, making your despression symptoms worse, or inflicting wellness problems, but you carry on to drink anyway.
